ORPE Technologiya Is Improving the Technology of Production of Optical Polycarbonate Glazing

The State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation ORPE Technologiya named after A.G. Romashin is improving the technology of production of aircraft glazing based on monolithic optical polycarbonate. The research results and practical experience in this field were presented on the all-Russian Science and Technology Conference “Functional and Polymer materials for aviation glazing”, organized in partnership with the all-Russian Scientific Research Institute of aviation materials (VIAM) of the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute”.

The speaker, Dmitry Chechin, the process engineer of research and production complex Glass, noted that at present ORPE Technologiya is the country’s only manufacturer of batch aviation glazing from monolithic optical polycarbonate. In 2018, the scientists of the enterprise won the Award of the Russian Federation Government in the field of science and technology for developing the technology of production of structural optics based on monolithic optical polycarbonate. The aviation polycarbonate glazing has half the weight as compared to the aviation silicate one. Moreover, the impact toughness of polycarbonate glazing is 100 times higher.

          Nowadays, the enterprise continues to improve the properties of optical polycarbonate glazing. The technology of moulding of optical polycarbonate articles with complex geometry developed for the benefit of Russian Ministry of Defence is also applied in production of civil aviation equipment: the scientists of ORPE Technologiya have developed the heterogeneous aviation glazing with electrically-heated coating.

          “Working with optical composites based on polycarbonate is an advanced direction which allows using the unique competencies in the field of chemical industry of the other holding companies of the State Corporation Rostec. The consolidation of research and production capabilities in the field of development and production of articles made from structural optics makes it possible to produce the articles that have no analogues,” noted Andrei Silkin, Director General of ORPE Technologiya.
