GLASS-FIBER-REINFORCED HONEYCOMB MATERIALS

are cellular structures with the walls from a monolayer glass-fiber-reinforced plastic. Different glass fabrics are used as a filler and phenol-formaldehyde resin is used as a polymeric matrix.
Honeycomb materials with hexagonal cells and cell face size from 2.5 to 10 mm depending on the field of application of the honeycomb material have received the widest acceptance.
Integrating sandwich structures into a structural unity, honeycomb materials assure maximum elastic-strength characteristics while having minimum weight.
In aircraft engineering glass-fiber-reinforced honeycomb materials are mainly used in aircraft exterior structures, i.e. nose fairings of a fuselage and a wing, wing and tail unit panels, high-lift devices as well as in sound-absorbing structures of the engine, floor panels, etc.
Owing to good dielectric characteristics in the microwave range, honeycomb materials find application in the structures of transmitting and receiving aerials, radioparent covers.
Glass-fiber-reinforced honeycomb materials have strength characteristics practically identical to the strength characteristics of polymeric honeycomb materials based on aramid paper. They also exhibit higher moisture resistance, lower flammability and lower cost.
Relatively low cost of glass-fiber-reinforced honeycomb materials allows them to be used in railway and water transport products.
