THERMAL PROTECTIVE MATERIALS BASED ON QUARTZ (TZMK) AND SILICA (TZM) FIBERS

The TZMK materials based on superfine and superpure quartz fibers have been developed to ensure thermal insulation of the space shuttle BURAN. The materials have successfully undergone flight test - only 10 tiles out of 36000 needed to be replaced after the BURAN landing. Nowadays the material TZM-23M based on cheaper silica fiber has been developed and is being produced. It compares well with the TZMK-10 material.

Owing to high thermal-insulation properties of the TZMK and TZM materials, the saving of energy and the decrease of overall dimensions and weight of the heating plants are achieved.
